We are now in Maine, the last of 14 states, and have about 300 miles to go.We are seriously trying to slow things down and New Hampshire and Maine help out a lot. There are many ups and downs every day and the tread ranges from boulders to rocks to mud to nice occasionally, but 12 miles days are routine for many of us. We are also going to be stopping in all the little charming Maine towns for a zero day and the first one is Andover. The trail here included some unforgettable scenery.
Mahoosuc Notch is reported in the guide as the "most difficult or most fun one mile of the AT." Here was another much anticipated mile that was not either as fun or as difficult as reports! We abandoned trekking poles and maneuvered through the mile in 1-1/2 hours. You rock climbers out there would have loved it! Didn't take many pictures as our hands were busy with other things, but here's a taste of the Notch.
You could crawl through here or climb around. We went around as through was really wet and tight.
After the Notch comes Mahoosuc Arm and some flat rock walking which I was happy to be doing uphill rather than down. The best is that we are into some grand views. Baldpate Mt. offered some fantastic 360-degree views and I'll just end this post with pictures of scenes along the trail.
